Rehab is about a period when Amy was drinking a lot, after she got dumped by Blake and thought that she would never see him again. Her management team was worried about her drinking and made her go to a clinic in London. The staff thought she was only depressed and she was sent home after 30 minutes.

The song wasn't meant to be on Back to Black. Amy was in New York to make the album with Mark Ronson, and while telling Mark about the incident, she sang the one "The tried to make me go to rehab but I say no no no". Mark thought it was really good and asked who done it. When she said she just came up with it, he said that she should write a song about it, which she did. Rehab was written in ten minutes. Impressive.
